PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE ON THE OCCASION OF GANDHI JAYANTI

01-10-2007 : Rashtrapati Bhavan, New Delhi

The President, Smt. Pratibha Devisingh Patil, has greeted the people on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, which will be celebrated tomorrow.

In a message she has said, "Gandhi Jayanti is an occasion for all of us to rededicate ourselves to the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi on peace and non-violence.

Mahatma Gandhi had said, "Non-Violence is the greatest force at the disposal of mankind. It is mightier than the mightiest weapon of destruction devised by the ingenuity of man ..." The life and work of Gandhiji is an inspiration for all of us about tolerance and respect. Gandhiji believed that intolerance was a form of violence. It is significant that the United Nations has declared October 2nd as the International Day of Non-Violence.

This year as the Nation celebrates the 60th Anniversary of Independence, it is an appropriate opportunity for all of us to gratefully remember and pay homage to the Father of the Nation."
